Real Madrid continued their dominance of the UCL by winning their 15th overall title (including titles won when the competition was called the ‘European Cup’) on the first day of June 2024 with a 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund at Wembley. Thoughts are already turning to next year’s competition – will Madrid win again, or can Manchester City repeat their 2023 triumph?
Here, we take a look at the potential fortunes of the bookies’ favoured six teams.
2023/24 performance – Winners
To win in 2024/25 Real Madrid (or indeed any team) will have to do something never done before – play 17 matches (up from 13 for the main-seeded teams). The new Champions League format will add to the playing burden of the world’s top players, asking questions of UEFA’s motives for expanding the competition.
Madrid already have one of the best squads in the world with top names such as Dani Carvajal, Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Junior and David Alaba, and can welcome Kylian Mbappe to that squad for the new term, although they have also lost Toni Kroos and Nacho. We’d happily back Madrid to repeat their 2023/24 success.
2023/24 performance – lost to Real Madrid (QF).
Still somehow dubbed the world’s best team and also somehow favourites for Champions League success, Manchester City only won a single trophy last term, the EPL. The loss of Gundogan, Mahrez, and Laporte hit City harder than they thought it would, and they must have kicked themselves for letting Cole Palmer sign for Chelsea. Josko Gvardiol was a fine addition, but both Jeremy Doku and Matheus Nunes were both hit and miss.
The summer of 2024 could see yet more turmoil, with Kevin De Bruyne, Kyle Walker, Bernando Silva and John Stones all entering the final year of their current contract. With 13 City players having a summer at the Euros (plus Alverez at the Copa America) the 2024-25 UCL season could be a strain for Pep Guardiola’s men.
2023/24 performance – lost to Bayern Munich (QF)
What have Nottingham Forest, Celtic, Feyenoord and Red Star Belgrade all done that Arsenal haven’t? That’s right, won Europe’s top club football competition. It’s even coming up to two decades since the Gunners’ only appearance in the final where they led Barcelona until the 76th minute and ended up losing 2-1. Last season’s run in the tournament ended in the usual Arsenal fashion, a defeat to Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals.
So, what will 2024/25 bring for England’s perennial nearly men? At the time of writing, Arsenal had only made a single summer signing, and that was David Raya, who’d been on loan with them from Brentford for most of last season anyhow. New men in the Arsenal red next season could include Bologna’s Riccardo Calafiori, Real Sociedad’s Mikel Merino and Atletico Bilbao’s Nico Williams, but until Arteta’s squad for next term is known, their UCL chances are not.
2023/24 performance – Did Not Qualify
Liverpool’s EPL win in 2020 was supposed to herald a new dawn of Anfield dominance under Jurgen Klopp, but it proved only to be a brief blip of dazzling light. True, for a few months last season, it seemed that Liverpool were going to mark the end of the Klopp era with another EPL title, but defeats to Crystal Palace and – of all teams – Everton in April put paid to that. Liverpool didn’t even play in the UCL last season due to a 5th place finish the previous term. Instead, they managed to limp all the way to the quarter-finals of the Europa League before being shockingly beaten 3-0 at home by Atalanta.
It’s another new dawn at Anfield with the arrival of Arne Slot from Feyenoord. He began work at Anfield on June 1, but with a depleted squad with Andy Robertson, Dominik Szoboszlai, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez, Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, Ryan Gravenberch, Ibrahima Konate and Diogo Jota at the Euros, and Alexis Mac Allister, Darwin Nunez, Alisson and Luis Diaz at the Copa America. Liverpool’s unknown quantities for the 2024/25 UCL is reflected in their relatively long price.
2023/24 performance – lost to Real Madrid (QF)
Only Harry Kane could leave a club where he won no trophies to join a club with a regular habit of winning a trophy … only to not win a trophy. Not only did Bayern’s complete dominance of the Bundesliga come to an end last season after eleven successive titles, they could only finish in third place behind first-time winners Bayer Leverkusen and VfB Stuttgart. This was despite Kane scoring 36 goals in 32 Bundesliga games. It came as no surprise then when ex-Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel announced he would not be the manager of Bayern once the season had concluded.
What did come as a surprise, though, was the naming of Tuchel’s replacement, Vincent Kompany. Fresh from taking Burnley back into the Championship after one season of EPL football, Kompany was appointed the new boss in May 2024. Bayern even paid Burnley £10 million in compensation for their manager, despite criticism of Kompany’s abilities when managing in the EPL, including his ‘tactical naivety’. Bayern still have a strong squad with Kane, Serge Gnabry, Leroy Sane and Euros star Jamal Musiala, but it remains to be seen what Kompany is capable of getting out of them.
2023/24 performance – lost to PSG (QF)
The Leo Messi era is well and truly over at Barcelona. Despite winning La Liga in their first Messi-free season, last term was one of complete disappointment. They finished ten points behind Real Madrid in La Liga, were bumped out of the Copa del Ray by Bilbao at the quarter-final stage, and lost to PSG at the same stage in the UCL. Manager Xavi ummed and aahed about staying on as boss after such a disappointing season and finally decided he would stay … only to be sacked by club president Joan Laporta anyhow.
Barcelona have a decent-enough squad with Ronald Araujo, Ilkay Gundogan, Robert Lewandowski, Raphino and wonderkid Lamine Yamal among the best players in La Liga. But with loanees Joao Cancelo and Joao Felix returning to their own clubs, it’s a squad severely lacking in depth. The new manager at the Camp Neu is Hansi Flick, ex-German national team manager and Bayern Munich multi-title winner. If Flick is going to win anything with Barcelona, a massive amount of recruitment will be required, at the very least.
Here now are some of the most popular betting offers you should find at the best football betting sites for the UEFA Champions League.
These offers are Champions League bets that you can make without using your own cash. They are usually awarded for making a similar bet using your own funds. For example, with a ‘Bet £10, Get £10’ deal you need to bet £10 using your own money to receive a £10 Champions League free bet. Free bets cannot be cashed out and if they win, you’ll only get your winnings, not your free bet stake back. Other T&Cs such as minimum betting odds for Champions League promotions and expiry times apply. BetMGM is a good site site for UEFA Champions League free bets.
This is a common offer on Champions League ties, especially ones involving UK clubs, and the big games towards the conclusion of the competition. With this deal, you will offered a bet on a particular result of a tie and, should you choose to place the bet you will get significantly better betting odds for Champions League matches than normal.
Usually, this deal does come with one caveat – any funds you make in excess of the normal Champions League betting odds will be paid as bonus money. Bonus money can never be cashed out and can only be used to place bets. Other restrictions may also apply. Keep tabs on Betfred for their Champions League enhanced odds.
There are many sites, such as bet365, that pay out Champions League bets as winners as soon as the side you have backed takes a two-goal lead no matter the final outcome of the game. Typically, all matches that take place in the Champions League, no matter the stage of the competition, are eligible for early payout.
These types of deals are practically identical to enhanced betting odds for Champions League matches deals, except that you may be able to use them on any event of your choosing. Some sites will even give you daily or weekly price boosts to use on any Champions League match as long as it meets certain criteria. Otherwise, price boosts may just be available on specific games.
As with enhanced Champions League betting odds, it is typical that money won in excess of payouts at the normal odds will be paid as bonus cash. QuinnBet frequently has beneficial Champions League price boosts.
These are Champions League free bets that only become available if your qualifying bet is a losing one. For example, say you have a £10 money-back Champions League betting promotion (also sometimes called a ‘no-risk’ bet) and the £10 bet you make for it loses. You will then get a £10 Champions League free bet. If your qualifying bet wins then you do not get your free bet. All Champions League free bets will come with all the usual free bet terms and conditions. Keep checking back at BetUK for Champions League money-back deals.
Accas are accumulators – a series of bets that are strung together so that the winnings from the first bet become the stake of the second, and so on. Any series of at least four bets is considered an acca. Naturally, if any leg of your acca is a loser, then your entire acca is a losing one. Winning accas though tend to generate high returns from very small stakes.
Many sites will boost your winning accas. For example, it could be a 2.5 per cent boost for a winning acca with four selections to a 100 per cent boost for an acca with fifteen or more selections. It’s unlikely that an acca boost would only apply to UCL matches only – you could mix your UCL picks with other games and even other outcomes in other sports. Paddy Power has an ‘Acca Cracker’ deal where your winning accas are worth more than elsewhere.
All Champions League betting sites in the UK have various welcome offers, including free bets, welcome bonuses and enhanced odds deals. You may find that a side could offer a Champions League welcome bonus – a deal that can only be used on UCL matches.
This could involve any of the offers we’ve outlined above but be quick, as Champions League welcome offers tend not to hang around for long. Look out especially for the best Champions League final betting offers. We advise checking Betfair for any Champions League welcome offers, and see if you like the exchange betting options at the site.
The Champions League enters a new era in 2024/25 with a significant revamp of the group stages. Teams from 53 of UEFA’s 55 members (Russian teams are banned and teams from Liechtenstein do not compete in their own league) will enter the competition – 81 teams in total. Twenty-nine teams will be granted entry immediately into the new league phase, while seven will have to go through qualifying rounds if they are to remain in the competition.
During the league phase, all 32 qualifiers will be drawn against eight other teams to play on a seeded basis – four at home and four away. All teams will be ranked by their records, with teams finishing 25th and lower eliminated. Teams in positions nine to 24 will meet in a single knock-out round, and then the eight winners will be paired with the top eight teams from the league. There then follows a straight series of knockout games over two legs until only two teams remain who will meet in the final at the Allianz Arena in Munich on 31 May 2025.
A speedy glance at all the most popular markets typically available for betting on the Champions League, and at any stage.
Perhaps the easiest bet – betting on the side likely to be celebrating after the final at the end of the European Champions League football season. The Champions League winner odds are likely to be the most generous at the start of the competition.
Predict the winner of any game, or if the game is likely to end in a tie. It’s important to remember that two-legged ties may go into extra time. When settling an individual match, matches are deemed as concluded after ninety minutes plus time added on for stoppages, so any goals scored during extra time do not count.
Combine two Champions League bets in one with a Double Chance bet, such as home/draw, away/draw or home/away. Again, any goals scored during extra time do not count.
Bet on the ‘result’ at half time (home side leading, away side leading or a draw), and the final result (not including any extra time – home win, away win, draw). Both sides of the bet must be winners, or else your bet loses.
Bet on a player scoring the first goal in the game. Own goals do not count for this bet in any way, so if the first goal scored is an own goal, it is ignored completely in terms of bet settlement.
Another bet in which any extra time is ignored. Place a Draw No Bet wager on the home side or the away side to win. You cannot bet on a draw and if the score at full time is tied, your stake is pushed back to you.
Yep, extra time is ignored here too! With handicap betting a team is given an artificial handicap or boost of a number of goals, and the final ‘score’ is adjusted accordingly. Say you are betting on Liverpool to beat Anderlecht and Liverpool have a -1.5 goal handicap, then a final score of 3-2 to Liverpool becomes 1.5-2 once the handicap is applied, and your bet loses.
Bet on the number of corners and/or cards in a specific game. In terms of corners, it could be overall or for a specific team, and per half or the full game. The same goes for cards, but can also be split into total cards, just yellow cards or just red cards.
Guess what! Extra time does not count here either! Bet on the final score of the game. You must be specific – for example if you say ‘2-1’ then that’s a bet on the scoreline, not the correct score. ‘Liverpool 2 Anderlecht 1’ is an example of a correct score bet.
If you want to bet on the UEFA Champions League but you really don’t know how to get started, then here are some tips that should see your Champion League bets start off on the right foot.
The UCL is not streamed at UK betting sites. Broadcasting rights to the UEFA Champions League are expensive, and betting sites simply cannot afford them. Even the earliest rounds of the UCL are not streamed at any Champions League betting sites.
The majority of Champions League matches in the UK can only be viewed on TNT Sports. One match per week will be available on Amazon Prime, and highlights can be viewed on the BBC.
The ‘European Champion Clubs’ Cup’ was first competed for in 1955, with only sixteen teams competing. The Football League champions at the time, Chelsea, were forbidden to enter by the Football League (next season’s qualifiers from England, Manchester United, were also forbidden to enter by the Football League, but they competed anyway). Real Madrid won in 1955, as they did in 1956, 1957, 1958 and 1959. The ‘European Cup’ as it became commonly known was replaced by the ‘Champions League’ in 1992.
