League One Football Betting Preview 2024/25

Who will be the main movers and shakers in League One this season, and more importantly, who cares? Seriously though, let’s take a quick look at the teams who should be looking towards the Championship at the end of the 2024/25 season.

League One Football

Birmingham City

Birmingham City FC logo.svg John Eustace successfully guided Birmingham City into the playoff positions last season in the Championship … and was sacked for his efforts. City owner Tom Wagner fancied Wayne Rooney as the club’s new boss, and the ‘Rooney effect’ was instantaneous … defeat after defeat after defeat until Rooney was dismissed two days into 2024. Then came a succession of interims – Steve Spooner, Tony Mowbray, Mark Venus and Gary Rowett and then Mowbray again, who resigned following Birmingham’s relegation.

City are favourites for League One title with the bookies with ex-Brendan Rogers and Ange Postecoglou assistant Chris Davies now in the hotseat. With hot-shot Jay Stansfield back at Fulham, and key man Jordan James not likely to stay, we’re not so sure of Birmingham’s very short price.

Bolton Wanderers

Bolton Wanderers FC logo.svg It’s now over a dozen years since Bolton’s thirteenth and final season in the English Premier League. It’s been a roller-coaster for the Trotters since then, finding themselves £173 million in debt in 2015 and then spending several years on the brink of survival. They flopped down to League Two in 2020 but bounced back at the first time of asking and finished third in League One last term only to lose to Oxford United in the playoff final.

Bolton boss Ian Evatt will be hoping for his side to go one better this time at least, or even finish in the automatic promotion spots. Young Greek striker Klaidi Lolos should be a fine addition after scoring 13 goals as an ever-present for Crawley Town last season, while defender Chris Forino-Joseph has signed from Wycombe. Bolton will also be hoping for another impressive season from Dion Charles.

Rotherham United

Rotherham United FC.svg Rotherham are League One’s promotion experts … except that once they get into the Championship, they just cannot stay there. Last season’s Championship disaster included a run of nine successive losses, four managers and joint top scorers Hakeem Odoffin and Tome Eaves netting four goals apiece. With the controversial ex-Leeds boss Steve Evans now installed as manager, Rotherham will be hoping to assemble a squad capable of getting them into the Championship again but this time staying there.

Rotherham have already recruited Reece James (not that one) from Sheffield Wednesday and experienced net-finder Jonson Clarke-Harris from Peterborough United. They’ve also cleared out a lot of last season’s relegated squad and treatment room stalwarts, including the experienced Tyler Blackett, Cafu, Sam Clucas, Sean Morrison and Lee Peltier. Evans will be hoping Rotherham experience a much happier and healthier term this time around.

Wrexham

Wrexham A.F.C. Logo.svg And so the Hollywood bandwagon that somehow is Wrexham AFC rolls on. The Red Dragons bounced straight up from non-league football into League One in one season, although it was not always plain sailing. The side didn’t really hit their stride until mid-October, and it all almost fell apart in February. A run of nine wins out of twelve games (including the final five) saw Wrexham seal second spot in League Two.

Despite the efforts of co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, Gareth Bale still hasn’t come out of retirement, but the side has managed to secure a new contract for key man Paul Mullin. Experienced pair Ben Tozer and Luke Young have both been released, though. Recruitment so far has been low-key, with goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo turning his loan spell from Arsenal into a permanent transfer and Lewis Brunt – shining while on loan at promotions rivals Mansfield Town last season – the main two new faces. Will Wrexham roll on to the Championship? At the moment, it seems unlikely.

Huddersfield Town

Huddersfield Town AFC crest.svg Huddersfield Town must look at Nottingham Forest in the English Premier League and think ‘that could have been us’. Defeated by Forest in the Championship playoff final in 2022 by a Levi Cowell own goal, the past two seasons have been nothing but disastrous for the Terriers. Since Carlos Corberan left in July 2022 to take over at West Brom, Town have had seven managers in Danny Schofield, Paul Harsley, Narcis Pelach, Mark Fotheringham, Neil Warnock, Darren Moore and Andre Breitenreiter. Breitenreiter was allowed to leave after just thirteen games in charge, paving the way for ex-Barnsley and Swansea Boss Michael Duff to take charge.

Jordan Rhodes has now joined Blackpool permanently after his loan spell last season, while Connor Mahoney and Aaron Rowe have both been replaced after making little impact at Kirklees. Incomings include Danish wing-back Lasse Sorensen from Lincoln, plus midfielders Herbie Kane from Barnsley and Antony Evans from Bristol Rovers. It’s hardly stellar recruitment, and with star winger Sorba Thomas likely to be sold, a return to the Championship for the Terriers seems highly improbable.

Popular League One Betting Offers

While it is true that League One betting online offers are not as popular or as prevalent as, say, Premier League betting offers, football betting sites may still offer them from time to time. Here are some betting offers for League One that you might find at the contenders for the honour of being called the best League One football betting site.

League One Free Bets

Free bets are wagers that you get to place with the betting site’s money, and not your own. Usually, you have to make a bet of the equivalent value of your own cash to qualify for a free bet. So, you could be required to make a £10 bet to get a £10 League One bet, and so on.

Such deals always come with plenty of terms and conditions such as payment method restrictions, minimum odds and expiry times. With any League One betting offer, always make sure you check the League One free bets terms and conditions, such as those on offer at Betfred.

League One Enhanced Odds

These are odds for any specific League One match and outcome where you get better odds than you would if placing a bet without the enhanced odds deal. If you place the requested bet and win, then you are paid at the more beneficial odds.

On caveat though – usually, although not always, any money you win in excess of the normal odds is paid as bonus cash rather than real money. Bonus cash cannot be withdrawn and can only be used for betting. Check out BetVictor for enhanced odds deals.

League One Early Payouts

This is not a League One football betting promotion as such, just a factor of a small handful of sites. Sites with early payout will pay out League One bets as settled as soon as the side you have backed takes any kind of two-goal lead. The final outcome of the match is irrelevant. Bet365 are the kings of the early payout.

League One Price Boosts

These are essentially the same as enhanced odds when it comes to League One betting offers. However, the boost is likely to be smaller than an enhanced odds deal, and all money won will be paid as cash. Sometimes you may get a type of price boost where you can choose which of your League One predictions you will use your boost on, and such offers are repeated monthly, weekly or even daily. We recommend you check out 888sport for price boosts.

League One Acca Boosts

Any multiple bet that is not a system bet and has a minimum of four selections is usually considered an acca. If all legs of your acca win, then your winnings are accumulated – winnings from bet A become the stake of bet B and so on.

Most online betting sites will boost your successful acca wins. As an example, BetMGM will boost a four-leg acca with a five percent bonus, all the way up to a 200 per cent boost for a 10-leg winning acca!

League One Money Back Specials

Fancy a bet you cannot lose? Well, you can with League One money back specials which will give you your stake money back as free bet (up to a specific maximum value) if indeed your qualifying bet does lose. Remember, free bet money can never be cashed out and can only be used for betting. Other terms and conditions will apply, so make sure you’re aware of any. Paddy Power may have the occasional League One money back special.

League One Welcome Offers

This may be a hopeful punt but we’ve decided to include it anyway. All UK betting sites will offer a welcome offer, such as a free bet or a matched bonus (i.e. bet £20 of your own money to get £20 in bonus cash). There may be a rare occasion where a welcome bonus is tied to a League One match, but it seems a bit unlikely to us.

Of course, there is absolutely nothing to stop you from using a welcome offer to place bets on your League One football tip selections! Check out the welcome offer at Boyle Sports.

League One Football and How it Works

EFL League One Logo.svg League One is the second tier of the Football League and the third tier overall of professional English football. It was created in 1920 when the Football League absorbed the Southern Football League. A season later, 20 more clubs were added to the Football League to form two same-tier divisions, ‘Third Division North’ and ‘Third Division South’. This set-up continued until 1958, when the bottom half of each division was combined to form the Fourth Division, leaving the Third Division as the sole third tier.

Upon the formation of the English Premier League, the Third Division became the Second Division. In 2004, the Football League completely rebranded, and the Second Division became League One, which it has been ever since.

League One consists of 24 sides, playing 46 games each per season (one home and one away against all other sides). The teams that end the season first and second are promoted to the Championship. Teams in positions three to six compete in a quick series of playoffs, with the winners also being promoted to The Championship. The bottom four sides in the final league table are relegated to League Two.

Seven new teams enter League One every season – three teams relegated from The Championship, the top three teams from League Two and the winners of the League Two playoffs.

Popular League One Football Betting Markets

So, what types of League One football bet markets are there? Well, hold on to your hat as we’ve about to list several of the most popular League One bets you can choose from.

League One Outright Winner

Wager on which side will sit atop the table after 46 games. You can also bet on teams to gain automatic promotion, finish in the top six or be relegated on a yes/no basis.

Match Betting

Bet on the outcome of any League One match. Which side will win, the hosts, the visitors or will it end all square? All known as 1X2 betting.

Correct Score

One of the tougher League One predictions – bet on the correct score of a match, including which team will win unless you are wagering on the draw.

Half-Time/Full-Time

Who will be leading at half-time, and who will be leading at full-time, or will the half-time or full-time score be level? You need to get both parts correct for your bet to generate any returns.

Draw No Bet

Don’t like draws? Then you’ll like draw no bet. You bet on the side you think is going to win the game, and if it ends in a draw, your stake is pushed back to you.

Double Chance

A football match usually has three possible results – home, away or draw. With a double chance bet you can combine two outcomes, with the options being home/draw, away/draw or home/away.

First Goalscorer

Bet on which player will find the back of the net first (or if there will be no goalscorers). For this bet, own goals are ignored completely, so if the first goal scored is an OG, it’s the second goal scored that becomes the ‘first goalscorer’.

Handicap Betting

If you consider yourself a League One betting online expert, then handicap betting could be for you. For a match, a team will be given an artificial goal handicap or boost. At most betting sites, you’ll be able to choose from a range of handicaps. When the game is over, the handicap of the team you backed is applied to see if your bet is a winning one or not.

Corners and Cards

Bet on a per-team or match overall basis. Bet on the number of corners won during the game, the number of red cards, yellow cards or cards overall.

League One Football Betting Tips

Fans of Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal (but not Manchester City) may know nothing of the lowly third tier as their sides have never been out of the top two divisions! To help them and anyone unfamiliar with League One football, here are three League One betting tips.

  1. Back the Big Guys

There is usually a huge differential between the top League One sides and the strugglers. For example, in 2023-45 Peterborough United were the top scorers (1.93 goals per game) while Shrewsbury Town really struggled to stick the ball in the onion bag (0.76 goals per game). Carlisle meanwhile were the big conceders (1.76 goals per game). Use such factors to place BTTS and over/under bets.
  2. Boing!

Teams that come up from League Two tend to consolidate or struggle. The teams that were promoted from League Two the previous season (2003/24) finished in the following positions: Leyton Orient (11th), Stevenage (9th), Northampton Town (14th) and Carlisle United (24th). Use this information to make League One betting tips, especially at the start of the season when they come up against sides relegated from the Championship.
  3. Keep an Eye on Transfers

More and more EPL sides are lending young players to League One sides in order for them to gain experience. For example, in 2023-24 League One champions Portsmouth were bolstered by Alex Robertson (Manchester C), Tino Anjorin (Chelsea) and Myles Peart-Harris (Brentford) plus Abu Kamara (Norwich C). Look out for teams who can boast potential future EPL stars in their ranks and bet accordingly.

League One Football Live Streaming and TV Coverage

League One games are not available for streaming at UK betting sites because of broadcasting deals struck with terrestrial and satellite broadcasters.

League One games are broadcast and can be streamed at Sky Sports in the UK. Non-UK residents can stream ALL League One games via iFollow.
