Six of the Best Greyhound Bookmakers

You’ve just seen our list of the ten best UK greyhound betting sites, so let’s now take a closer look at the cream of the crop.

1. Bet365 – Our Top Dog for Greyhound Betting in the UK

Bet365 is the one betting site in the UK that everyone has heard of – not least because of the tabloids moaning about how much CEO and founder Denise Coates earns! This UK company provides plenty of jobs, so we don’t care how much Mrs Coates has in her bank account. What we do care about is how well bet365 compares with other greyhound betting sites. And the short answer is that it’s the best of the bunch.

bet365 hp

Although the minimalistic design won’t be everybody’s cup of tea, bet365 gets the top vote for dog racing due to its exceptional market coverage and betting options. Not only is UK greyhound racing well-covered, but you can bet on Aussie greyhound races too. Those have eight runners as opposed to the six, which is great for anyone who wants a stiffer challenge. Oh and one more crucial thing – 99% of global greyhound races at bet365 can be streamed live!

What We Like:

  • Global greyhound coverage, including 8-dog Aussie races
  • 99% of greyhound races are live-streamed
  • Bet Boosts and Tote betting are available too

Room for Improvement:

  • Site design is boring

2. William Hill – Fully-Featured Site for Dog Racing Fans

William Hill was just touched off in a photo finish for top place, and that’s not surprising. This household name brand was established in 1934, so it’s been around for almost a century and currently has over 1,400 betting shops on UK high streets. Fortunately, you don’t have to grab a coat and brave the rain to bet on greyhounds with William Hill. Simply visit its website or use the downloadable greyhound racing app that it offers for iOS and Android.

williamhill hp

Greyhound coverage at William Hill is exceptional, with all UK and Australian races covered in great style. There are plenty of special deals and offers to take advantage of here. One of which will give you your money back if your Trap Challenge bet ends up a real dud with no winners. Practically all dog races are available for streaming at William Hill’s ‘Betting TV’ and if you’re extra lucky you might get an instant prize via random bonus drops. Just make sure you’re logged in to stand a chance.

What We Like:

  • Full coverage of UK and Australian dog meets with streaming
  • Trap Challenge bet refunds your stake if you get no winners
  • Increase your returns with one Bet Boost each day
  • Virtual greyhound racing too

Room for Improvement:

  • Site can get cramped with information

3. 10bet – Provides Free Live Streaming on UK Races

Now we come to a leader among betting sites for greyhound racing that’s perhaps not as well known as some of the others on our list – although perhaps with our help that won’t be the case much longer! 10bet is an excellent site for all manner of sporting bets, and we particularly champion it for football, horse racing and of course, greyhounds. Betting on the dogs here is provided by two betting services – PA (Press Association) and SIS (Sports Information Services Limited).

10bet hp

One of the best things about this site is that ALL UK greyhound races are available for live streaming. And you don’t even need to make a bet to watch them! All you have to do is set up a 10bet account and log in. When you do come to make a wager, you can choose from win bets, place bets, each way bets, forecasts and tricasts. Coverage of greyhound racing here doesn’t seem to extend much beyond the UK, so you’ll have to go elsewhere for the Australian action.

What We Like:

  • Complete coverage of all UK greyhound races (PA & SIS)
  • Free live streaming of all UK races with no bet required
  • Clean design makes speedy betting a breeze

Room for Improvement:

  • No pool or tote betting

4. BetUK – Best Greyhounds Racing Site for Form Buffs!

Greyhound racing is primarily a UK pastime. The only other countries that appreciate it are Australia, Ireland, Mexico (which has one track), New Zealand and the US (which has two tracks). So, since this is a popular British sport, why not place your bets at the red white and blue betting site BetUK?

betuk hp

BetUK is big on two other popular UK pastimes – betting on football and betting on horse racing. Even so, the provisions for dog racing here shouldn’t be sniffed at. Full coverage of every race is available, and if you’re a form buff you’ll love the fact that complete racecards are provided. These include each runner’s last six finishes, which should make it easier to pick a winner or two. Every dog race is available for streaming at BetUK as long as you have an account and are logged in. This isn’t a pool betting site though, so it’s only win, place, each way, forecast and tricast bets that are available.

What We Like:

  • Live streaming of races available to all BetUK account holders
  • Full UK racecards include a recent form summary for each runner
  • Complete suite of limit options for safer gambling

Room for Improvement:

  • Not much at all in the way of specials

5. SpreadEx – Best Greyhound Betting for Spreads

If you’re wondering how spread betting on greyhounds works, or you want to practice it, Spreadex is a great place to visit. Here you can bet on the racecard, as well as on each race. For example, the ‘multi-traps’ market multiplies the winning trap number by the runner-up trap number and totals the resulting figures across all races. You then bet higher or lower than the range of totals offered by SpreadEx. The ‘Bananas’ market works similarly but also multiplies the third-place trap number for each race.

spreadex hp

You can also spread bet on a single race, with winning greyhounds being awarded 15 points, and runners-up 5 points. A full explanation of all options is available at the site.

If all that seems a little complicated for your tired brain, then don’t worry as fixed odds betting on each race is available too. You just click on the starting price of your dog to add it to your slip, and your bet is on. We could, however, only find win/place and each betting available. Streaming is also hot at this venue, with all races being available to SpreadEx site users.

What We Like:

  • Great range of greyhound racing spread betting markets
  • Plenty of regular fixed odds betting available too
  • Live streaming of all UK races for Spreadex customers

Room for Improvement:

  • Spread betting can be hard to understand

6. BoyleSports – Best for Unique Greyhound Betting Markets

Greyhound racing has never really taken off in Ireland as much as it has in the UK. Irish dog racing has its own regulatory board (Greyhound Racing Ireland) but there are only 14 dog racing tracks in the country concentrated in 3 counties – Connacht (1), Leinster (6) and Munster (7). You might be wondering then, how good the coverage of greyhounds is at Boylesports, one of Ireland’s leading betting sites.

Boylesports sports homepage

The answer is – excellent! Especially if you’re looking for something a little different. BoyleSports has some betting options we’ve not seen elsewhere, and they’re well worth checking out. Among the unique markets available here are  Inside v Outside for Aussie races (bet on traps 1 to 4 to beat 5 to 8 or vice versa), Odds v Evens (you can work that out yourself!) and betting without the favourite (if the favourite wins and your chosen dog comes second, then your bet wins). BoyleSports has live streaming too, but not all Aussie races are covered.

What We Like:

  • Plenty of inventive dog betting markets and specials
  • Full coverage of racing in the UK, Australia, Mexico and more
  • Provides full racecards with form summaries

Room for Improvement:

  • Not all races are live-streamed

What We Look For at Online Greyhound Betting Sites

We take our greyhound betting seriously, which is why we also take our evaluation of the leading greyhound racing betting sites seriously too. There is a lot we look at when deciding which sites to recommend and which to avoid. We can’t list everything, so instead we have picked out six determining factors that we feel are especially crucial.

Free Bets and Offers

Betting sites and promotions are not the be-all and end-all of even the best greyhound betting sites, but they are certainly effective sweeteners! We check all betting sites we come across and evaluate any free bets and offers they make are fair and square. We also check for greyhound-specific bonuses, such as paying out each-way bets for extra places, or returning bets as a free bet if your selection gets beaten into second place by the favourite.

Range of Betting Markets

To be an effective greyhound betting site, any online bookie must offer as decent a range of greyhound betting markets as possible. If all you can bet on is winners, places and each way, then you need to look elsewhere. Sites should, at a bare minimum, offer system bets and forecasts. However, you might struggle to find pool bet options (such as the exacta or quinella) at fixed-odds bookies.

Early Greyhound Prices

The more information you can gather about any greyhound race the better armed you’ll be to make effective bets. And the earlier that information comes to hand, the more prepared you’ll be. As the available greyhound betting odds are a key factor in determining how you are likely to bet, having the prices a couple of days before the race is always helpful. That’s why we select the best sites that offer early greyhound prices.

Best Odds Guaranteed

We think ‘best odds guaranteed’ – often abbreviated as ‘BOG’ – is a must-have at all the leading greyhound racing betting sites in the UK. This is where you are guaranteed the best price (and best returns) for your bet. If the starting price is more beneficial than the price at which you placed your bet (or vice versa) then you always get paid at the more beneficial price.

Live Streaming of Greyhound Races

As you’ve seen already, there are plenty of sites that provide live streaming of greyhound races. Indeed, the very existence of greyhound racing is largely dependent on the excitement experienced by watching the races you have bets on. If you are using a greyhound betting site that doesn’t stream the action live and direct from the racetrack then we have to ask the question: Why?

Greyhound Betting Apps

Nearly all of the sites on our best greyhound betting sites list offer a greyhound betting app that you can download and install on your mobile devices. If the site doesn’t mention that it offers an app, then make sure you check out the Apple App Store or Google Play to see if one is available. If you are still struggling to find a greyhound racing app then don’t worry – you can use any site on a phone or tablet via a browser.

Popular UK Greyhound Betting Markets

There are plenty of ways in which you can bet on greyhounds, so it doesn’t all have to be about picking the winner. Here we throw some floodlights on each of the most popular greyhound betting markets and give you a quick overview of what they involve.

➡️Win

The simplest bet of all, as it is on any other sport in the UK. Pick the dog out of the six runners that you think is going to win.

➡️Place

You can cover your chances of winning a little more fully with a place bet. Here, you win if your dog finishes first or second. The odds paid will be equal to a quarter of the win odds.

➡️Each Way

Just like horse racing, you can back your top dog each way. Half of your bet goes on the win, and half on the place. If your dog wins, both halves of the bet will pay out. If it places second, only the place half will pay.

➡️Straight Forecast

Select one dog to win, and another to finish in second place. Your returns (if you win) will be announced shortly after the race has been run and the result called.

➡️Reverse Forecast

The same as a straight forecast except that your two selections can finish first and second in any order for the bet to win. Again, the value of any returns will only be available once the race has been run.

➡️Trifecta

Here things get even trickier, because you need to select three dogs to finish first, second and third, and in the exact order you state. A boxed trifecta is selecting three dogs that can occupy the top three positions in any order, which makes it easier to win with, but at much lower odds.

➡️Quinella

The same as a reverse forecast except that this is a pooled bet. All quinella bets are pooled and then that pool is divided out to punters who select the first two finishers, no matter the order.

➡️Exacta

Like a quinella, an exacta is the pooled version of a straight forecast. The pool of money from exacta bets is shared equally among those who selected the first two finishers in the correct order.

➡️Pick 3/Pick 6

An accumulator bet covering the first three or six races on a card, respectively. All picks must win for the overall bet to win. There are pooled versions of these bets too, with the pool being shared by those who manage to select the most winners.

➡️Trap Challenge

A bet on your choice of trap number over a specified number of races. You win your if your selected trap produces more winners than any other for the selected number of races.

Greyhound Racing in the UK

Dog racing history in the UK goes back beyond the 1900s, but the first official greyhound race on a track took place at Belle Vue in Manchester in July 1926. The popularity of greyhound racing swiftly boomed and within ten years there were 200 tracks all over the UK boasting, in total, over 32 million visitors each year.

Doggie racing mania boomed again in the immediate post-war years, but interest in ‘going to the dogs’ began to wane in the late 1970s, and in 2024 only 21 greyhound tracks are still operating in the UK. Fortunately, betting on the sport continues to remain popular at greyhound betting sites in the UK, many of which live-stream the action.

Most UK greyhound races are run via the Bookmakers Afternoon Greyhound Service (BAGS) which is owned by a consortium of UK bookies led by William Hill, Coral and Ladbrokes. Evening greyhound races are run via the Bookmakers Evening Greyhound Service (BEGS).

How to Win at Greyhound Betting

If you want to be successful at greyhound online betting sites, then you can forget taking a casual approach to the task. You will increase your chances of winning consistent profits only if you take your greyhound betting seriously. We now present for you five tips that should help you sharpen your greyhound betting strategy.

  1. Study the Form

This is a no-brainer for any sport, and it particularly applies to greyhound racing. No matter how well-fancied a dog is, if it is running below par of late, this could be an indicator of illness or an undiagnosed injury. This especially applies to older dogs as they are generally more consistent than younger ones. Also, be on the lookout for younger dogs that are showing recent improvement.
  2. Don’t Think Outside the Box

The starting position of a greyhound is important. Some dogs perform well against the rails while others prefer to be free to take whatever line they want, even though it means they run a greater distance. Check to see if any dog you are considering betting on is in a trap that will give it a starting position it favours.
  3. Go the Distance

Different dogs have different running styles. Some explode out of the traps but quickly lose stamina. Others are slow out of the traps but build speed until they reach the head of the field. The distance of the race is important when considering which type of animal to bet on. Most greyhound races in the UK are run over 480 metres, but betting on sprint races (two bends) may pay you more dividends than betting on stayers races (6 bends).
  4. Go Dutch

Dutching is one way of hedging your bets so you do not lose money on every race where you fail to pick the winner. Let’s say there’s a dog you fancy in a race, priced at 4.00. It’s not the favourite though, and top dog in the race is priced at 2.50. If you were to bet £10 on your fancied dog and it’s beaten, you lose £10. An alternative would be to bet £8 on your choice, and £2 on the favourite. That way, should the favourite triumph you’d get back £5, which is better than losing £10.
  5. Learn the Lingo

Greyhound betting has developed over close to one hundred years, so has developed its own lexicon of terms and abbreviations. We will go over some common terms later on in this article, but it really is up to you to familiarise yourself with the language of greyhound betting. Abbreviations such as Blk, HndTm and RnUp will only divulge their meaning (baulked, hand timed, run-up) and stick in your head once you’ve studied them in full.

Virtual Greyhound Betting

The majority of online greyhound betting sites in the UK offer virtual greyhound betting. These are simulated greyhound races with computer-generated imagery. All non-pool bets (win, place, forecast, tricast) will be available. Each virtual race has six dogs just like a real greyhound race, and you choose your bet, usually based solely on the price. Some versions of virtual greyhound racing will also show the recent form of the dogs.

The main benefit of virtual dog race betting online is that races take place once per minute, so you are never short of a race to bet on. The main downside though is that other than the odds, you have very little to go on in terms of information when making your bets.

Standout Greyhound Betting Offers

Greyhound bettors are fortunate that the best bookmakers are always keen to run special offers for the sport. Of course, you can also take advantage of welcome offers that apply to all sports, but it’s always worth keeping an eye open for greyhound-specific betting bonuses too. Here are just a few that we currently like the look of:

QuinnBet – Free Bet for 2nd to the Favourite

QuinnBet This is a great offer for regular bettors because it’s available in select races every day. The deal here is simple. Make a single or each-way bet on one of the selected races. If your dog finishes second to the favourite you’ll get a free bet to the value of your bet, up to £10. Note that there must be 6 dogs in the race and the SP of the favourite must be 6/4 or better.

Bet365 – Best Odds Guaranteed

logo bet365We love the simplicity of this offer and how practical it is. Simply take a price on your selection when you make your bet. If your greyhound wins and its starting price is bigger than the price you took, bet355 will settle your bet at the higher SP. Note that Australian greyhound racing is excluded from this offer.

William Hill – Trap Challenge Money Back Offer

William Hill

The Trap Challenge bet lets you bet on which trap will produce the most winners, and this offer protects you against a total loss. Make a bet on the Evening RPGTV Combined Trap Challenge market at William Hill and if your chosen trap fails to give a single winner, you’ll get your money back. A minimum of 20 races must take place across both meetings.

Paddy Power – Money Back for 2nd or 3rd to the Favourite

paddy power 1Bet on any of the selected races at Paddy Power every Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday. If your chosen greyhound in a race finishes in 2nd or 3rd place and the SP favourite wins, your bet will be refunded as a free bet, up to the value of £10. All 6 dogs must run.

Where to Find the Best Greyhound Betting Odds

Because there are so many greyhound races being run in the UK daily, online bookies must get their odds right to avoid losing too much cash! Sadly, for UK punters, they do. UK dog racing prices don’t vary much across sites, so as long as you stick to legal and recognised betting sites (such as those mentioned on this page) you won’t have to worry much about it. Look for sites with early greyhound prices so you can get your wagers on before the odds tighten up.

When considering making Ante Post bets, shop around for the best prices. For example, if you want to bet on De Lahdedah to win the 2024 Greyhound Derby, these are some of the best prices available (as of 13:30 GMT, 01/07/24):

  • Bet365 - 16/1
  • Betfair - 14/1
  • Paddy Power - 14/1

Key Events in Greyhound Betting

UK greyhound racing is not just about betting. Each race offers prize money to the owner of the winner, so all trainers take the training and rearing of their dogs very seriously. Greyhound owners are unlikely to become millionaires unless they have a number of exceptional dogs, but many of them train their animals full-time.

Naturally, some races are more prestigious than others, with top prize money going to the fastest dogs in the country. Here we outline some of the leading races in each year’s greyhound racing calendar.

English Greyhound Derby Betting

The number one race in the annual greyhounds calendar, the English Greyhound Derby was first run in 1927. Traditionally held at White City Stadium in London, the race has had a nomadic existence since 1985 but now has settled at Towcester, where it has been run since 2021.

Just under 200 dogs enter the race each year and run qualifying heats until only six dogs remain for the final, which takes place in June. The 2023 top dog in the English Greyhound Derby was Gaytime Nemo, winning the grand prize of £175,000.

Irish Greyhound Derby Betting

Many of the leading greyhounds of all time have been born and bred in Ireland, which has its own greyhound derby. This has been running unofficially since 1928 and officially since 1932. The race has largely been run at Shelbourne Park aside from between 1932 and 1967 when the race alternated between Shelbourne Park and Harold’s Cross, both in Dublin.

The 2023 version of the Irish Greyhound Derby was sponsored by BoyleSports and won in July by The Other Kobe, the brother of the 2022 winner Born Warrior. The Other Kobe took the winner’s pot of €125,000.

Select Stakes Betting

A popular race for both spectators and participants, the Select Stakes was first run at Wembley Stadium in 1952, but it has since moved to Nottingham. This race has been sponsored in the past by many leading greyhound betting UK sites, including Victor Chandler, Ladbrokes and Betfred. The top prize is currently £10,000, which was taken back to the kennel in 2023 by Clona Duke.

Coral Olympic Betting

A showpiece event that is run every December at Brighton and Hove Stadium. This race was first run at Wandsworth in 1965 and then at Charlton until 1979. It was resurrected by Hove in 1979 and has run there ever since, being sponsored by Coral since 2009. The 2023 winner King Memphis took home £10,000 and the Olympic Cup. It was the fourth win for trainer Liz McNair.

Oxford Challenge Cup Betting

Another Christmas evening meeting, the Oxford Challenge Cup takes place at the Greyhound Stadium in Oxford. Currently sponsored by bet365, the event takes place over three days and the winner takes home £10,000. Havana Top Note was the top dog in 2023.

All England Cup Betting

This top-class annual greyhound race was first run in 1938 at Brough Park which was later rechristened Newcastle Stadium. Every subsequent race has taken place at the same venue. The 2023 version of this race was sponsored by Premier Greyhound Racing, and won by Mickys Barret.

Glossary of Greyhound Racing Terms

Like all sports and pastimes in the UK, greyhound racing has over time developed its own lexicon of terms. You may find a term at a greyhound betting site that you’re not familiar with, causing unnecessary confusion. We are here to help in this matter, as we now present to you a list of greyhound racing terms and a quick explanation of each.

Term Definition
Ante post A bet placed on the outcome of a future race
BAGS Bookmakers Afternoon Greyhound Service
BEGS Bookmakers Evening Greyhound Service
Box An alternative name for a trap - the cage each dog is placed into pre-race
Forecast A bet in which the bettor selects the two dogs they think will finish in the top two
Going The state of the track as adjudged by the handicapper
Grade The race’s level, determining the expected ability of the entrants
Jolly A casual name for the race favourite
Lay The opposite of betting - to bet against a dog winning
Open Race The top level of greyhound racing
Place To finish either first or second in a race
Puppy A greyhound that is under two years of age
Rag The rank outsider of the race
Tricast A bet in which the bettor selects three dogs to finish first, third and second
Trap The pen into which the dog is placed before the start of the race
Trial A race in which no bets are allowed as it is just a race for dogs to gain experience
Tote Pool betting, where bets are pooled and the total then shared out among winners

The Traps

In all greyhound races, dogs wear vests and colours to aid identification. The association of trap number and colour is always as follows:

Trap Number Colour
1 Red
2 (T4 in Australia) Blue
3 White
4 Black
5 Yellow
6 (T2 in Australia) Black and White Stripes
6 (Australia Only) Green
7 (Australia Only) Gold on Black
8 (Australia Only) Pink

In open races, the trap numbers are drawn randomly. In graded races, it is up to the race manager to decide which dog is placed in which trap.

Gone to the Dogs

If you have followed this guide closely, you should be confident enough to visit an online greyhound betting site and make your first bet. You know what greyhound betting involves, how to get the most out of any dog racing bets you place, and how to win at greyhound betting by studying form, taking into account the stake of the course and the weather, and searching out the best bets for all races. The hare's running, so we'll see you there!
